What Does The Spirit Of Giving Mean To A Scientologist?
Parishioners of the Church of Scientology in Clearwater wrapped up their Holiday giving with two signature events the weekend before Christmas.
CLEARWATER Fla., Dec. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Church of Scientology Flag Service Organization and its parishioners established a record 10,000 volunteer hours over the holidays during two signature events they organize for the community. The Clearwater Community Volunteers spent 5,625 hours fundraising, organizing and manning Clearwater's Winter Wonderland in downtown Clearwater for the 22nd year and wrapped up their holiday giving on Saturday the 21st with their 5,769th visitor to their sparkling Winter site. On that same day, the Dianetics Athletics Association held their 26th Annual Say No to Drugs Holiday Classic Race for some 2,500 runners and 1,000 spectators and recorded their 4,375th volunteer hour.
Beating last year's record, Winter Wonderland collected twice as much food and toys which were donated to the Pinellas County Public Defender's Nourish to Flourish program for several hundred children whose families are otherwise unable to enjoy the spirit of giving.
Runners at the Say No to Drugs Race, not only get a great workout but they also celebrate with a traditional pancake breakfast in Coachman Park. While they replenish their carbohydrate supply, the true message of the race was in evidence at the Foundation for a Drug Free World's (www.drugfreeworld.org) display, where the group's popular Truth About Drugs booklets were distributed and people signed a pledge to live drug-free.
Runners included an 81-year-old who has been running in the race since the very first race 26 years ago. He won in his age category.
Church spokesperson, Pat Harney, said, "The object of Scientology is not just to improve the individual for himself but also so he can then work to improve the lives of those around him. This is what we celebrate as 2014 draws to a close."
