KENT, Wash., Aug. 24, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Back-to-school season means much more than young people returning to the classroom. Across Washington, an increasing number of working adults recognize the value of education and what it can mean for their careers. To further encourage those men and women to pursue their educational goals, WGU Washington is now offering the Smart Choice Scholarship to new and enrolling students in more than 60 bachelor's and master's degree programs offered by the online, nonprofit university. Scholarship applications are being accepted through Sept. 30, 2017.

Each Smart Choice Scholarship is valued at up to $2,000—$500 per six-month term, renewable for up to four terms. To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must be officially admitted to WGU Washington, complete the scholarship application, and be interviewed by a university scholarship counselor. A comprehensive list of eligibility requirements can be found here. Recipients will be selected based on their academic records, financial needs, and readiness for online study at WGU Washington, among other considerations.
Designed to fit into the lives of midcareer professionals, WGU Washington's degree programs provide the job-ready training and credentials employers seek. The university is not-for-profit and regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.
"Because of my education, I have a better job and a higher salary," said Courtney Christoffers, a recent WGU Washington graduate. "WGU Washington helped open new doors of opportunity and create a better lifestyle for my family. For that I am so grateful."
WGU Washington uses a unique competency-based educational model that measures learning rather than time spent in class. This system allows busy, working adults to advance their careers without disrupting work or other obligations. Students advance through their coursework by studying on their own time and — once they're ready — proving what they've learned. Prior work experience and academic knowledge may enable students to accelerate through subject matter they already know, giving them more time to focus on what they still need to learn. This enables many students to accelerate their studies, finishing faster, which saves not only time, but money.
WGU Washington is an online, competency-based university designed to expand access to higher education for Washington residents. In 2011, the Washington State Legislature created WGU Washington in partnership with nationally recognized Western Governors University.
