WASHINGTON, June 17, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Competency-based education leader Western Governors University (WGU) will announce a new scholarship at the Society for Human Resource Management's (SHRM) Annual Conference, which begins in Washington, D.C., June 19. Applications are being accepted for the Breakthrough in HR Scholarship, which will provide each recipient up to $2,000 ($500 per six-month term, up to four terms). The scholarship program is for HR professionals who are looking to advance their career with a B.S. Business – Human Resource Management, Master of Business Administration (MBA), or M.S. Management and Leadership degree.
To be eligible, scholarship applicants must be officially admitted to WGU, complete the scholarship application, complete an essay on "How my education at WGU will make me a more effective human resource practitioner and/or business person," and be interviewed by a WGU scholarship counselor. WGU will award up to 20 scholarships, selecting recipients based on their academic record, readiness for online study at WGU, current competency, and other considerations.
Both WGU and SHRM use competency-based learning models—competency-based learning focuses on measuring mastery of knowledge and skills rather than time spent in classes. WGU has pioneered competency-based higher education and now has more than 70,000 enrolled students in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. SHRM's competency-based model identifies skills needed for successful HR professionals and helps organizations ensure that their HR teams are proficient in the critical competencies necessary to solve today's most pressing people issues.
