SAN ANTONIO, June 5, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- At a surprise presentation at Athlos Leadership Academy in San Antonio, WGU Texas presented teacher Breanna Longbrake with a $2,000 scholarship, coinciding with Teacher Appreciation Week. WGU Texas and the Education Service Center, Region 20 (ESC-20) launched a corporate partnership one year ago expanding access to higher education for ESC-20 employees, ISDs and charter schools. The agreement includes scholarships and tuition discounts.
"Through the partnership with ESC-20 and WGU Texas, we are able to increase high-quality educational opportunities for our employees," said Athlos Leadership Academy Principal Hector Gomez. "Scholarships like the one presented today are a prime example of how we can encourage educational advancement and pay tribute to our teachers. I am proud of Breanna and what she has been able to achieve."
WGU Texas and ESC-20 established a strategic partnership in 2016 with the goal of providing pathways to high-quality educational opportunities that support educators and address the statewide teacher shortage.
"I am grateful to receive the ESC-20 Teacher Appreciation scholarship," said Breanna Longbrake. "This scholarship will go a long way in helping me finish my degree at WGU Texas." Breanna is a high school math teacher at Athlos Leadership Academy, a charter school in the ESC-20 region. She is attending WGU Texas pursuing her Master's in Teaching, Mathematics.
"The corporate partnership we have established with ESC-20 demonstrates a strong commitment and focus on education," said WGU Texas Chancellor Veronica Vargas Stidvent. "Texas teachers are the real heroes in their communities, and we were happy to play a part in this scholarship award."
