AUSTIN, Texas, June 14, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- WGU Texas celebrated the graduation of 202 students in May, the largest number of monthly graduates in the school's history. Graduates of WGU Texas, the state's nonprofit, competency-based, online university, now total 6,665, and the university is closing in on 10,000 students enrolled—currently, 9,327 students are enrolled in WGU Texas undergraduate or graduate degree programs.
The student enrollment and graduate milestones come on the heels of the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) honoring Western Governors University (WGU), the parent university of WGU Texas.
For the seventh time, the USDLA has honored WGU with a 21st Century Distance Learning Award for its leadership in distance education. The USDLA recognizes major accomplishments in distance learning and the instructors, programs, and professionals who have achieved and demonstrated extraordinary results using online, videoconferencing, satellite, and blended learning delivery technologies.
"WGU Texas Night Owls know online learning doesn't mean feeling disconnected. From WGU Texas' mentors to our strong online student and alumni networks and career placement support, our competency-based undergraduate and graduate degrees are putting higher education within reach for more Texans—and doing so without sacrificing quality or value," said WGU Texas Chancellor Veronica Vargas Stidvent.
Mona Horton, a 2016 WGU Texas graduate with a B.S. in Health Informatics describes her student experience, "I love this school! I get to work at my own pace without a financial burden. The support system keeps me accountable and I love that I receive timely assistance. This school has met all of my expectations and more."
As a leader and pioneer of competency-based education—an innovative learning model that allows students to learn at their own pace and advance as soon as they demonstrate mastery of subject matter—WGU Texas offers affordable, online degree programs designed to meet the needs of busy, working adults.
WGU Texas admissions counselors can answer questions, provide resources and help set prospective students on a path toward their degree. Texans and Texas employers can learn more about WGU's student-focused approach and academic experience online here.
