WGU and Salt Lake Bees Award Four Students Tuition for One Year

Students receive $6,000 tuition scholarships for online university at Bees final homestand

SALT LAKE CITY, Aug. 28, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Western Governors University (WGU) and the Salt Lake Bees teamed up to grant scholarships worth a year's tuition to four local students prior to Friday's game for Salt Lake's Triple-A baseball team. And although rain canceled the game before it even had a chance to start, the four scholarship recipients—Haydee Rojas, Cassidy Peterson, Tearsa Amielee Graul, and Jared Harding—were still awarded the scholarships by WGU's Scholarship Director Nick Rothacher and mascot, Sage the Night Owl, on the field at Smith's Ballpark.

Each of the winners is currently enrolled at WGU and submitted an official entry form earlier in the season. Rojas is working toward her bachelor's degree in business management, Peterson is earning his master's degree in mathematics education, Graul is getting her bachelor's degree in nursing, and Harding is completing his master's degree in management and leadership.

"This scholarship will allow me to dedicate more time to my studies as I juggle work and family commitments," said Graul, who currently works full time as a nurse, in addition to school and raising two kids.

The majority of WGU students are working adults who benefit from WGU's flexibility and competency-based online courses, which allow students to advance through their programs as soon as they're able to demonstrate mastery of the material. This, combined with low tuition of $6,000 a year for most programs, is helping more working adults go back to school, including 3,600 Utahns among the nationwide student body of more than 49,000.
