CINCINNATI, April 4, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Nonprofit, online Western Governors University (WGU) and the Ohio Association of Community Colleges (OACC) announced today a scholarship program for alumni and staff of the 23 member community colleges in Ohio. Students that have graduated with an associate's degree or are employed at one of the 23 community colleges are eligible to apply.
The WGU Ohio Community College Scholarships, valued at $2,500 each, will be applied at the rate of $625 per six-month term, renewable for up to four terms, toward WGU's already low tuition of about $6,000 per year for most programs.

Last fall, WGU and the OACC announced a partnership that allows Ohio community college graduates to seamlessly transfer their coursework to WGU while also receiving a 5% tuition discount. Today's scholarship announcement builds on that partnership, making it even more affordable for community college graduates and staff to complete their college journey with a bachelor's or master's degree.
WGU uses an innovative approach to learning called competency-based education, which focuses on measuring learning rather than time spent in class. Students earn their degrees by demonstrating mastery of the subject matter they need to be successful—real-world competencies developed in collaboration with employers.
Designed to meet the needs of adult learners, competency-based education allows students to take advantage of their knowledge and experience to move quickly through material they already know so they can focus on what they still need to learn. WGU faculty members work one-on-one with students as mentors, offering guidance, support, and individualized instruction. While WGU's degree programs are rigorous and challenging, competency-based learning makes it possible for students to accelerate their progress, saving both time and money.
This scholarship is open to new WGU students who have been officially admitted to WGU. While multiple scholarships will be awarded, it is a competitive program. Scholarships will be awarded based on the candidate's academic record, readiness for online study, and current competency, as well as other considerations.
