Westwood mine production continues uninterrupted during a localized rock burst
TORONTO, Jan. 22, 2015 /PRNewswire/ - IAMGOLD Corporation ("IAMGOLD" or "the Company") reports that an event occurred in a confined area of the Westwood mine in Quebec this afternoon, January 22, 2015. A rock burst occurred and caused a localized underground ground fall. No employees were injured and all employees in the mine were evacuated. Access for four people was initially blocked, however, they were not injured and were also able to exit the mine safely.
Gold production in the mill was not interrupted as Westwood has sufficient stockpiles and has advanced underground development to the extent that it has many operating underground stopes from which to mine. Mining, in the specific area affected by the rock burst, has been suspended until the situation analysis is completed, as worker safety remains the priority.
The Westwood emergency response team was immediately deployed. Government authorities, including the provincial safety authorities CSST, and local stakeholders have been notified.
