Western Dental Provides Free Dental Care at Clinic

ORANGE, Calif., Oct. 24, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Responding to an urgent need for oral health, Western Dental Services, Inc., Thursday supplied dozens of needy Los Angeles citizens with critical dental treatments at CareNow, a free health clinic at the L.A. Sports Arena.

Western Dental, California's largest staff model dental HMO, sent top-level dentists to quickly and expertly evaluate and treat clinic participants, all of whom had multiple, urgent dental ailments, said volunteer Dr. Naeil Elhussiny, D.D.S., a clinical director for several Western Dental regions.

"It's obvious that a large sector of our population doesn't have sufficient dental care," said Dr. Elhussiny. "Unfortunately, we saw a lot of people who said that they had to choose between paying rent and buying food or paying for dental treatment," he said.

Dr. Elhussiny and colleagues Drs. Manoel Zarmine, Wesam Alani, and Soumava Sen performed fillings, cleanings and extractions on clinic participants.

"My group and I focused on patients who were in pain," he said. "Many also had questions about future dental care and what they could do to prevent dental disease."

To meet the enormous demand for dental information and services at the event, Western Dental volunteers distributed packets containing toothbrushes, floss and toothpaste and guides to preventive oral care.

"In this harsh economic climate, we're doing our part to ease the suffering of our most needy," said Samuel H. Gruenbaum, Western Dental President and CEO. "We absolutely plan to provide more volunteers at future health fairs," he said.

The event, which ended Sunday, provided free medical, dental and vision services to the area's uninsured, underinsured and underserved and was organized by CareNow, an L.A.-based nonprofit organization.
