SAN DIEGO, Oct. 30, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The West Health Investment Fund has made a $4.25 million investment in Reflexion Health, Inc., a newly formed startup company that has licensed Microsoft Kinect for Windows-based physical therapy software developed at the West Health Institute. "Reflexion Health is another great example of how the West Health entities work together to develop technologies that can lower the cost of health care," said Nick Valeriani, chief executive of West Health. "Initially developed at the West Health Institute, now funded by the Investment Fund and moving to the Incubator, we look forward to Reflexion Health helping to lower the cost of health care for patients undergoing physical therapy."
Reflexion Health develops prescription software for health care. Its first application, the Rehabilitation Measurement Tool (RMT), addresses musculoskeletal disease, which costs Americans $127 billion a year, according to estimates from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Used with the Kinect for Windows' motion tracking system and a personal computer, the application provides interactive feedback and educational materials. This is expected to potentially help physical therapists and physicians measure a patient's rehabilitation and eventually improve patient adherence to the prescribed therapy and ensure the exercises are performed correctly. "Reflexion Health is demonstrating that engaging medical software can become a powerful tool for clinicians to help patients, just like prescription drugs or traditional medical devices," said Spencer Hutchins, co-founder and CEO of Reflexion Health. "This substantial investment will help Reflexion Health build its world-class team, accelerate product development and conduct clinical trials with the system."
Reflexion Health is growing its team and looking for world-class talent in the following areas: software developers, designers, validation engineers and technical support engineers. Please see all the employment opportunities at www.reflexionhealth.com/join-the-team.
The RMT has not yet been cleared for marketing by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Reflexion Health is the second resident company of the recently launched West Health Incubator, located in La Jolla on the same campus as the West Health Institute, with approximately 10,000 square feet of space. The Incubator, which also is home to West Health-developed Sense4Baby, Inc., provides infrastructure, strategic guidance and access to an extensive network of key partners, allowing for the transfer to industry of research technologies developed at the Institute and elsewhere that have the potential to lower the costs of health care. Prior to acceptance or admission, companies in the Incubator must receive an investment commitment from the West Health Investment Fund.
