NEW YORK, April 6, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Werther's Original, one of America's most beloved caramel brands, hit the streets and social media yesterday, sharing 1 million pieces of rich, creamy caramel to celebrate National Caramel Day (April 5). Broadway star, Megan Hilty, even got in on the action, making the day a little sweeter for commuters and tourists who visited the giant, custom-made 6 ft. diameter candy bowl in the heart of Times Square. From 7am until 12pm ET, Werther's served up heaping scoops of candy, BYOB-style (bring your own (candy) bowl, of course), to New Yorkers and visitors alike. Perfect for sharing, Werther's handed out two bags to each guest – one for themselves and one for a friend.
A wide variety of sweet treats were given, including Werther's Original Caramel Hard Candies, Chewy Caramels, Creamy Caramel Filled and Soft Caramels – the newest and softest addition to the Werther's line.
Nationally, caramel lovers across the country got involved by guessing the number of candies in the giant Times Square bowl via Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, using the hashtag #ShareYourWerthers for a chance to win exclusive giveaways. Winners will be contacted on Wednesday, April 6.
"We want to thank everyone who came out to celebrate National Caramel Day with Werther's," said Meredith Suffron, Director of Marketing for Werther's Original. "It was such a treat for us to share this special day and our delicious line of candy with caramel lovers nationwide!"

ABOUT WERTHER'S
Candy-maker Gustav Nebel first introduced his delicious, iconic caramel recipe in 1909 in the small European village of Werther, Germany. Using only the best ingredients — real butter, fresh cream, white and brown sugars, a pinch of salt and a lot of time — he created a treasure worthy of being wrapped in gold and named the candy Werther's Original in honor of his village. Crafting this smooth, creamy caramel became a family tradition handed down through generations.
Today, Werther's Original comes in several varieties, from hard, soft, and sugar free to filled candies and caramel popcorn. Headquartered in Germany and Chicago, people all around the world enjoy the unique taste of Werther's Original.
