PLEASANT GROVE, Utah, Aug. 11, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- doTERRA Wellness Advocate Jaclyn Ripperger-Harrel never thought that a simple visit to her local coffee shop in Colorado would give her the chance to help people all over the world. The coffee shop, called Global Goods & Coffee, is run by the nonprofit organization Global Refuge. During one visit to the coffee shop, Jaclyn learned that proceeds from the shop go toward helping Global Refuge's efforts in places like Uganda, South Sudan, Burma, Syria, and even close by in Denver.
After learning about Global Refuge's efforts, Jaclyn began volunteering at the organization's local thrift store, Global Thrift, which also donates all of its profits to Global Refuge projects. Jaclyn works with other volunteers to run the store, keep it stocked and clean, and help customers who come in.
Global Refuge has various ongoing projects designed to help refugees who have been displaced due to conflict or natural disasters. They aim to assist refugees who need medical attention by training local medics, creating makeshift clinics, and working to prevent and treat diseases. One of Global Refuge's big initiatives is their campaign called The 5, which aims to help refugees with five common diseases—cholera, dysentery, malaria, pneumonia, and malnutrition.
According to Global Refuge, cholera, dysentery, malaria, pneumonia, and malnutrition were responsible for 95 percent of all deaths among displaced people and refugees around the world in 2011. By offering clinics, supplies, and trainings, Global Refuge aims to lower the number of people with diseases like malaria and pneumonia, and prevent them from spreading in the first place.
Aside from The 5 campaign, Global Refuge has various projects that offer education about treating and preventing diseases, provide emergency care after natural disasters, and help provide clean water and supplies in dire circumstances. Using funds from the thrift store and coffee shop, Global Refuge can help displaced individuals throughout the world who need immediate help.
As a social worker in the healthcare industry, Jaclyn feels particularly attracted to Global Refuge's mission, because they help improve the lives of refugees all over the world who are suffering from devastating diseases. She says, "For two dollars, a child can be treated for malaria and given medication to prevent reinfection. Global Refuge has taught me that even giving a little can go a long way."
