ATLANTA, March 31, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Wellcentive, a leader in value-based care solutions, today announced that it has awarded its second annual Veterans Medical Scholarship to C.W. Driscoll, a former U.S. Marine and Air Force veteran. The scholarship gives $5,000 to a military veteran pursuing a career in medicine.
Driscoll first served in the U.S. Marine Corps, which included combat tours in Afghanistan. Afterward, Driscoll was deployed under U.S. government contracts with several private security agencies. These paramilitary security teams provided protection to U.S. diplomats, foreign dignitaries and other key government personnel in hostile areas. While conducting these operations, Driscoll and his team came under enemy fire that left several team members mortally wounded.
"I attempted to render aid to my wounded team members while simultaneously trying to address my own injuries," said Driscoll. "In that moment, I realized their injuries required more than the basic medical training I had to save them. I later learned that one of the team members I was trying to help only required some simple airway interventions that may have saved a life. Learning that something so recognizable by most clinicians could have made the difference between life and death was a driving force for me to further my own medical knowledge. I never wanted to lose a team member like that again."
At the end of this deployment, Driscoll re-enlisted in the military, this time joining the U.S. Air Force. Determined to gain the medical knowledge he desired, Driscoll volunteered to undergo the rigorous training requirements of the Pararescue training program. Air Force Pararescuemen are tasked with technical rescue, recovery and return missions, and undergo more than two years of combat-oriented medical training.
Following the training Driscoll received in the Air Force, he received his second honorable discharge. "I knew I wanted to pursue an advanced career in medicine," said Driscoll. "Wellcentive's generous scholarship will help me realize my goals, and what the company is doing for veterans is a model for the business community. I am very thankful and most graciously accept this scholarship on behalf of all U.S. veterans building their lives after military service."
"C.W. has a remarkable history of selfless service. I have immense respect for the path he has taken to serve his country and his team members in the field," said Tom Zajac, Wellcentive CEO. "We are honored to award our scholarship to someone with such dedication and passion, and are enthusiastic to see these qualities applied to clinical services. We hope this award lifts some of the financial burden of a medical degree for C.W., so that he can dedicate himself to his academics and the pursuit of a medical career."
Driscoll has completed a B.S. in Integrative Neuroscience, graduating from the University of New Hampshire with distinctions. He is currently enrolled at Bryant University's Physician Assistant program. After graduating, he plans to return to military service to provide medical care to men and women on the battlefield.
