Spencer Kympton, President of The Mission Continues, will be this year's featured speaker. The Mission Continues reintegrates veterans who are adjusting to life outside the military by engaging them in the work of strengthening communities from within.
Kympton's remarks will highlight the Foundation's newest area of giving—supporting military members and their families. Grants made within this portfolio emphasize programs focused on workforce development, physical and mental health, and the elimination of barriers, including free legal services to veterans for discharge status updates.
"The Weinberg Foundation will award up to $2 million per year in grants for veterans," said Donn Weinberg, Weinberg Foundation Trustee and Executive Vice President. "This was the next logical step for the Foundation, which has long supported nonprofits that assist those who have served our nation with honor. For us, this is also personal. A picture in our board room of my father Nathan, a former Weinberg trustee, includes one of his dog tags. He specifically requested that be done. It is both a special remembrance of Nathan and a tribute to all who served."
Every year, the Foundation distributes approximately $100 million in grants to nonprofits serving low-income and vulnerable individuals and families. As much as 30 percent of all Weinberg Foundation funding remains within Maryland benefitting, in particular, the greater Baltimore metropolitan area.
"The Annual Community Gathering not only celebrates the Weinberg Foundation's mission and work but also the work of its many wonderful partners and grantees," said Rachel Garbow Monroe, Weinberg Foundation President and Chief Executive Officer. "This event expresses the Foundation's gratitude for their important contributions that help make our communities stronger each year, and as always honors the legacy of caring established by Harry and Jeanette Weinberg."
Since 1980, the Foundation has distributed grants totaling approximately $2 billion. Foundation grants are allocated through seven program areas, including older adults, workforce development, education, general community support, disabilities, basic human needs & health, and veterans. The Foundation's grantmaking emphasizes nonprofits that serve older adults and the Jewish community.
