Weight Watchers® 5th Annual Lose For Good® Campaign Makes Significant Contribution To Hunger Relief Organizations
Weight Watchers donates $1 million for weight lost by members and subscribers
NEW YORK, Oct. 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Weight Watchers today announced that it will donate $1 million to hunger-fighting organizations Share Our Strength and Action Against Hunger through its 5th Annual Lose For Good campaign. The yearly initiative gives meetings members and Weight Watchers Online subscribers the chance to help fight global hunger and chronic malnutrition, simply by losing weight. This year, Weight Watchers members and Online subscribers lost an estimated 4 million pounds during the seven week campaign, and more than 860 food drives were conducted in meetings rooms, resulting in the donation of nearly 200,000 pounds of food to local food banks.
From the inaugural campaign in 2008 through 2012, Weight Watchers will have donated $5 million to its partners to help fight hunger, and Weight Watchers members and online subscribers have lost an estimated 20 million pounds during the campaigns. In addition, Weight Watchers members have donated more than 5.7 million pounds of food to local banks.
Each year, the Lose For Good campaign invites Weight Watchers members and Weight Watchers Online subscribers to lose weight, and Weight Watchers donates up to $1 million to Share Our Strength® and Action Against Hunger. Share Our Strength's No Kid Hungry® campaign is ending childhood hunger in America by ensuring all children get the healthy food they need, every day, while Action Against Hunger fights hunger and chronic malnutrition around the world.
"We're thrilled to once again translate our members' and subscribers' successful weight loss into a meaningful contribution to these worthy organizations," said Cheryl Callan, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Weight Watchers International. "We're so proud of their commitment not only to their health, but also the health of others in their community and around the world."
Weight Watchers Recognized with Action Against Hunger Humanitarian Award
This year, Action Against Hunger will honor Weight Watchers with the Humanitarian Award at its annual gala in New York on October 30. The Action Against Hunger Humanitarian Award, now in its 12th year, recognizes corporations and individuals whose philanthropy, public awareness efforts, or direct work in emergency settings has contributed significantly to the humanitarian field. Past recipients include Tyco International, filmmaker Terry George, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, President Nelson Mandela, journalist Anderson Cooper, actor Susan Sarandon, and the late author Frank McCourt, among others.
"Weight Watchers contribution to Action Against Hunger over the past few years has truly made an impact," said Nan Dale, CEO of Action Against Hunger. "It is through the support of companies like this that we are able to truly make a difference in the lives of children around the world."
Since 2008, Weight Watchers has donated $1.5 million to Action Against Hunger through the Lose For Good campaign. That contribution helps the organization battle hunger and save the lives of malnourished children and families in more than 40 countries.
"We are truly honored and humbled by this recognition from Action Against Hunger," said David Kirchhoff, President and CEO, Weight Watchers International. "This organization makes such a meaningful difference in people's lives and in the world and we're proud supporters."
