Webster University's Walker Business School Announces New Graduate Degree Program in Nonprofit Leadership
ST. LOUIS, Aug. 7, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The George Herbert Walker School of Business & Technology at Webster University has established a new Master of Arts in Nonprofit Leadership. This is the only nonprofit leadership program of its kind offered by a school of business in the St. Louis area.
The 36-credit-hour MA in Nonprofit Leadership program is designed to promote a holistic, business-focused nonprofit management thinking process among students and develop real-world business skills that emphasize both the organization's mission and the business of leading a self-sustaining nonprofit organization. Required courses cover such topics as governance and executive leadership in nonprofits, marketing and resource development, financial management and budgeting, social enterprises and social entrepreneurship, and alliances, partnerships and mergers among nonprofits.
"Leading today's nonprofit organization requires a unique blend of 'heart' and business," said Dr. Benjamin Ola. Akande, dean of the Walker Business School. "The new MA in Nonprofit Leadership degree fulfills the need to provide business knowledge to current and future nonprofit leaders so they can provide managerial and fiscal leadership along with the delivery of mission."
"It's an incredible challenge for people not only to work for a nonprofit but to lead and manage one as well," said Dr. Barrett Baebler, director of Webster's MA in Nonprofit Leadership program. "Nonprofits have to learn how to balance the need for developing resources to provide the necessary finances to manage a nonprofit organization; including budgets, cash flow, etc. as well as providing the overall executive leadership in order to manage the organization."
According to Baebler, there is a great need in the nonprofit industry for professionals who ensure the financial viability of the organization, its human resource management and its operations. "This new program will establish the Walker School as a center of excellence within the nonprofit community," he said.
