ORLANDO, Fla., Sept. 4, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- When everything goes right, packaged terminal air conditioning (PTAC) units provide a perfect solution to an important business question: "How do you make a hotel guest room comfortable for the least cost?" The low cost and simplicity of PTAC units are two of their most appealing features.
Problems arise when PTAC units are also expected to accomplish three other important functions: 1) control guest room humidity levels; 2) control guest room odors by introducing adequate amounts of treated outside air ventilation; and 3) provide proper pressurization versus outdoors so that moisture is not drawn into guest rooms or wall cavities. These three faulty assumptions have caused many PTAC-related moisture and mold problems in warm, humid climates. In fact, over the past 30 years, experts at Liberty Building Forensics Group (LBFG) have investigated dozens of hotel moisture problems (involving hundreds of PTAC units) caused by such incorrect assumptions.
"When ventilation, pressurization, and dehumidification of hotels with PTACs are accurately measured, many guest rooms do not reach even the minimum requirements necessary to meet codes, prevent problems, or avoid guest complaints," said LBFG President George DuBose, CGC. "These deficiencies are often the cause of increased mold problems, objectionable odors in guest rooms, and elevated moisture conditions that can jeopardize the integrity of the facility and be the source of guest complaints – especially in warm, humid climates."
Even though there is substantial evidence that PTAC units cannot consistently and properly ventilate, pressurize, and dehumidify, the astonishing truth is that there are entire industries (like the hotel industry) that believe they can - including owners, operators, developers, contractors, and designers.
To help educate the public and industry specialists about these facts, LBFG has developed a webinar course designed to expose PTAC myths, explain how to avoid problems that come from them, and demonstrate how to repair a problem if it has already occurred in your building. It will also uncover the role that owner-driven brand standards can play in causing PTAC issues in certain climates, such as warm and humid regions.
This free webinar, called "3 Myths of PTAC Units," will be held on September 13, 2018 from 1:15-2:15pm EDT. Register here: https://lx375-678ec8.pages.infusionsoft.net.
