SALT LAKE CITY, Aug. 29, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Weber State University Telitha E. Lindquist College of Arts & Humanities (http://weber.edu/cah), is working collectively with Ogden Nature Center, O1ARTS' O1|WALLS initiative (a 501c3 non profit) on an ambitious public art project featuring internationally- renowned artist, Jane Kim, founder of Ink Dwell studio. As part of Ink Dwell's Migrating Mural campaign, which highlights wildlife along migration corridors it shares with humans, the three installations planned for Ogden feature monarch butterflies and will be on display at Weber State University's Kimball Visual Arts Center, Ogden Nature Center and The Monarch. The Ogden Migrating Murals are part of a larger network of monarch-inspired murals created by Ink Dwell, with other installations in Florida, Arkansas and California. The objective of the massive community art project is to beautify public spaces and educate the community about the natural history of the monarch butterfly and threats it faces, while inspiring local artists to participate in public art in and around Ogden, Utah.
"What makes this endeavor unique is the collaboration among artists, students, the city, business and nonprofit organizations to create works of art in front of the world, in real-time," said Thaine Fischer of The Monarch. "Jane's artwork is unparalleled in both quality and scope. Her large-scale murals illustrate the story of the beautiful monarch butterfly."
"Each year, as part of the Hurst Artist-in-Residence program, we aim to host artists who are regarded internationally at the forefront of their craft," said Scott Sprenger, Dean of the Lindquist College of Arts & Humanities. "Jane Kim's month-long residency on the Weber State University campus promises to enrich the lives of students, faculty, staff and Utah residents who desire to observe and closely interact with an inspired muralist. It was especially exciting this year to see the Hurst residency program expand into a community-wide collaboration with the Ogden Nature Center, Ogden City, Weber County, O1ARTS, and The Monarch, which is situated in the heart of the emerging Nine Rails Creative District in downtown Ogden."
The project began at the Ogden Nature Center with the display of original artwork depicting monarch butterflies on banners welcoming visitors. The next phase of the project is currently taking place in downtown Ogden with Kim's work on external walls of The Monarch, a unique creative space for artists and community members including a restaurant, retail and event area set to open in 2019. The third phase of the project will be a monochrome mural located on the Weber State University in the Kimball Visual Arts building set for completion at the end of October 2018.
"We are thrilled to be part of this collaborative project with Jane's beautiful art greeting visitors at they enter the Ogden Nature Center," said Brandi Bosworth, public relations coordinator for the Ogden Nature Center. "This project nicely parallels the mission of the Ogden Nature Center -- to teach the community about the natural world. Jane's banners at the Ogden Nature Center illustrate the life cycle of the monarch."
"This project represents the launch of O1ARTS' third of four main initiative: O1|WALLS, a program for producing and executing sanctioned murals, street art and/or digital displays on other privately-owned vertical surfaces," said Scott Patria, project manager for O1ARTS. "The Migrating Mural exemplifies O1ART's belief that art can and should be integrated as widely as possible in daily life, (#arteverywhere) and should engage, educate and empower both artists and community: #artwithpurpose."
Jane Kim received her MFA from Rhode Island School of Design, a master's certificate in science illustration and is and founder of Ink Dwell, a studio that creates art to inspire people to love and protect the natural world . She has produced works for The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, National Aquarium, de Young Museum, The Nature Conservancy, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, Facebook, and others. To view a schedule of events/activities, including a public lecture on Friday, October 12 at 6 p.m., please visit weber.edu/artscalendar for a full calendar of events pertaining to Kim's visit.
