WCCCD Fifth Annual Reading Carnival Makes Reading Fun

Books and Book Bag Giveaway, Interactive Activities and Face Painting to Round Out Annual Event

DETROIT, May 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Interactive programs, storytelling and exciting give aways will be included in a day of family fun at the Wayne County Community College District's Fifth Annual Chancellor's Reading Carnival for Children. The program will be held 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 19th at WCCCD's Downtown Campus at 1001 W. Fort St. in Detroit.

The annual event is open to the public at no cost and aimed at providing a comfortable and fun environment for children in pre-K to 6th grade to get excited about reading and learning. Strong literacy skills are closely tied to academic and career success, and better quality of life, and tend to lead to generational improvement in academic performance, according to information garnered from the most recent National Adult Literacy Survey. More than 20 percent of adults nationwide read at or below a fifth grade level, far below the level needed to earn a living wage.

Refreshments, face painting and activities round out the Reading Carnival. Books and book bags also will be given to the children, while supplies last.
