Wayland Teams Give Back on Degree of Difference Day
PLAINVIEW, Texas, Nov. 3, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Wayland Baptist University offers students a faith based learning environment, online degree programs and a variety of recreational activities such as the sixth Degree of Difference Day. Being among the best Christian colleges in the United States, WBU hosted more than 100 volunteers of students, faculty and staff. The volunteers worked on service projects geared towards making a difference in the Plainview community.
A group of 15 teams set forth to accomplish a variety of service projects such as cleaning the areas around the football fields at the city park, picking up trash at the cemetery, washing cars for the Special Olympics, and baking cookies for Meals on Wheels.
Other teams worked on volunteer projects that focused on the university. Students and faculty also cleaned up the Faith in Sharing House and helped with the production of the Go-Tell Crusade.
This specific day was created to help give back to the community of Plainview and make a difference. Many of the students have said that this opportunity and experience really made a difference in them. For those who worked alongside the Special Olympians life lessons were learned.
"I got to talk with one athlete in particular," said Libby Saultz, a junior from Amarillo. "The things he shared with me made me think about how different actions affect people."
For those who worked at the Plainview Church of God learned a new skill.
"I had never used a sewing machine before, so I was discouraged when my product didn't look awesome," said Alexis Walter, an education major from Albuquerque. "But we were reminded that the kids don't care what the puppets look like. They are still going to hear Jesus through them."
JayR Dunn, a junior religion major from Houston said, "We needed some projects where we can see that life is more about giving than receiving." As the youth pastor at First Baptist Church of Hale Center he has stated, "I want them to see what it is like to put the gospel in action, sacrificial love, giving of their time to help others."
