Watchdog Groups Demand a Senate Vote on the DISCLOSE Act Before the Thanksgiving Recess
Call On Senator Harry Reid To Tell GOP Senators, 'No Vote, No Vacation'
WASHINGTON, Nov. 16, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Protect Our Elections calls on Senator Harry Reid to tell Republican Senators, "No Vote, No Vacation!"
Last June, the House of Representatives passed the DISCLOSE Act to put some common sense limits on corporate funding of elections. But when the bill was called for a vote in the Senate, not a single Republican voted for it because they wanted corporations to flood their campaigns with hundreds of millions in secret money.
Protect Our Elections, http://www.protectourelections.org, a network of organizations dedicated to fair elections representing more than a million members, now calls on Senator Majority Leader Harry Reid to announce that he will not adjourn the Senate for the Thanksgiving recess until the DISCLOSE Act is passed. "We need transparency in our elections so voters know whether a candidate is being supported by ordinary citizens or corporate barons," said Protect Our Elections spokesman Kevin Zeese. "It is telling that GOP Senators have been blocking a vote on legislation that simply requires disclosure of those corporations that are funding election ads. Clearly, these Senators want to keep that funding secret because they are in the pocket of Big Business. It is not a coincidence that GOP groups like the Chamber of Commerce and Karl Rove's American Crossroads spent hundreds of millions in secret money to elect GOP Congress members who will protect the interests of Big Business rather than ordinary citizens."
Protect Our Elections is calling on American citizens and good government organizations to join in this call for Senator Reid to ensure a vote on the DISCLOSE Act to protect our democracy. Tell him, "No Vote, No Vacation."
