Washington High School Teacher Named Second Runner-up for National Teacher of the Year Award
ARLINGTON, Va., Nov. 3, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Air Force Association (AFA) announced Jeff Scott, a dedicated math and science teacher at Washington High School in Tacoma, Washington, as the second runner-up for the 2014 National Teacher of the Year Award.
Scott established a highly successful Engineer Program which is based on a robotic program and stresses team work to teach the students to work as a unit. The program is slated to expand next year to include an Aviation Engineering Program.
In addition to his leadership in the classroom, Scott is also an advisor for M.E.S.A. (Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Achievement), an after school club mentoring minority students. Scott also volunteers his time to community service and coaches various sports.
Scott has been teaching for over 24 years and has spent the last 14 years in his current teaching position at Washington High School.
As second runner-up, Scott received a $1,000 cash award. AFA's National Teacher of the Year, Kaci Heins of Northland Preparatory Academy in Flagstaff, Arizona, received $3,000 and first runner-up, Michael Steeber of Frazier High School in Perryopolis, Pennsylvania, received $2,000.
The National Teacher of the Year award recognizes classroom teachers at the national level for their achievements in building enthusiasm among K-12 students about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), and preparing them to use these skills and contribute to tomorrow's technologies.
