MANCHESTER BY THE SEA, Mass., May 25, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- A student who is passionate about cleaning up St. Albans Bay, Vermont, and restoring it to a place of beauty will get a head start on her dream—with an all expense paid scholarship to the nation's number-one college for sustainability-based education, Green Mountain College. The First in Sustainability Scholarship Award was the brain child of Warner Communications, a world-class boutique public relations and communications firm, and its client, Green Mountain College (GMC). The essay-based scholarship rewards a student who wants to pursue an education devoted to ensuring social, economic and/or environmental sustainability.
"When we started working with Green Mountain College last fall, we knew that we needed something that would inspire and get the attention of students, parents, guidance counselors and the media to better understand the fantastic opportunity that the college offers," said Carin Warner, president and founder of Warner Communications. "Working with Karen Martinsen Fleming, the college's Chief Marketing Officer, we created the scholarship contest to bring to light the inspiring and practical education that GMC provides to students, especially those who want to dedicate their lives to changing the world for the better."
Jessica Casey, of St. Albans, Vermont, is the 2017 recipient of the First in Sustainability Scholarship Award from GMC. Her essay on phosphorous contamination of the bay, which is part of Lake Champlain – its impact on people, animals and marine life, and how she will use a GMC education to develop solutions – has earned her the award, which covers her tuition, room/board and fees for all four years of study.
"Warner Communications was inspired by Green Mountain College's dedication to providing a personal and purposeful education, that prepares our graduates to 'do well by doing good,'" said Karen Martinsen Fleming. "This scholarship is a terrific way to further catalyze prospective students to tackle the sustainability challenges of our time. We couldn't be happier about Jessica being our inaugural winner! She is exactly the kind of young leader the world needs: informed and enthused about creating a more sustainable world."
As she noted in her essay, Jessica grew up witnessing the decay of the bay and how "phosphorous contamination is causing chaos in Lake Champlain." She mourns the loss of the Bay as a "center of family activities," noting that "dogs have died because of the dangerous algae blooms in these waters." Her mission: to bring back this spot as a place of beauty and recreation.
"The Renewable Energy and Ecological Design program at Green Mountain College can help me develop the understanding and methods I need to repair the damage already inflicted," she added. "I want to learn all I can, and Green Mountain College is the ideal next step for me. Moreover, my overnight visit to the school conveyed such a sense of community that I'm even more excited to attend this fall," she added.
