Warm Your Heart 5K runs through McCormick Place on February 23
Chicago's only single-loop indoor 5K benefits Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute
CHICAGO, Jan. 17, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Lace up your sneakers and get that heart pumping — the Warm Your Heart 5K race, Chicago's only single-loop indoor run through McCormick Place, is scheduled for February 23.
Runners and three-member relay teams can test their times in the third annual race that benefits Northwestern Medicine's Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute, Illinois' and Chicago's top-ranked heart center, according to U.S. News and World Report.
"We're working daily at the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute to provide compassionate care to all our patients while advancing the fields of cardiovascular medicine," said Charles Davidson, MD, medical director of the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute and the chief of clinical cardiology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. "We're proud to partner with the Warm Your Heart 5K to raise funds that ultimately benefit the patients we treat."
For both men and women, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, killing about 600,000 in America every year. There are a number of risk factors for heart disease, including diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, being overweight or obese, cigarette smoking, excessive alcohol use or poor diet. Many of these risk factors can be mitigated through healthier eating, more frequent exercising and managing stress.
"Doctors at Bluhm are focused not only on providing the most cutting edge treatment options for heart disease but also helping patients make the lifestyle changes they need to live a long and healthy life," said Davidson, who is also a professor of cardiology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. "Exercise can be a lifesaver for anyone with heart disease. Together we can help you sustain your commitment to a healthier life while providing the diagnostic tools and treatment for patients with a wide variety of heart issues."
Registration is currently open though space is limited to 3,000 runners. Each participant receives a long-sleeve technical tee. The course is certified by USATF and there is also a team relay option for three member teams, with each team member running one mile. The Warm Your Heart 5K is presented by Magnetar Capital.
Northwestern Medicine's Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute was ranked the 12th cardiology and heart surgery program in the United States and first in Chicago, Illinois and the Midwest by the 2013-14 U.S. News & World Report "Best Hospitals" report.
