Channel One News launches 2016's OneVote, the student election with a perfect record predicting our next president
NEW YORK, Feb. 4, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Channel One News, a Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) company, today announced the launch of OneVote 2016, its celebrated student election that brings a year-long, interactive learning program to upper elementary, middle and high schools across the country. The program culminates in a mock election in October that millions of students nationwide are expected to vote in – students who have a perfect record in accurately predicting the next president of the United States in every OneVote poll since the program began in 1992.
In addition to the mock election, OneVote 2016 will include dedicated Channel One News coverage of primaries, caucuses and election issues created specifically for a student audience. This coverage will include reports from six students who will form Team OneVote, a dedicated teen news team that will produce a personal look at how the election and political process is affecting them, their families, classmates, friends, and futures. Applications for Team OneVote will open in April and members will be chosen by the senior editorial team of Channel One News.
"This election is shaping up to be one of the most complex in recent memory," said CJ Kettler, Executive Vice President, Chief of Consumer Brands and Strategy, HMH. "It is a great opportunity to help our audience – which is largely middle and high school students –understand and experience the electoral process in a way that sparks interest and curiosity in current events. These students are the country's next generation of voters and civic leaders, which is why it is so important to provide a platform that enables them to voice their thoughts and opinions throughout the campaign."
Student polls, teaching tools and information materials will also be available via the OneVote2016 news center, which went live on Monday, February 1, to coincide with the Iowa caucus, giving educators access to infographics, lesson plans, and issues such as election and campaign laws, candidate profiles, the Electoral College and more.
OneVote 2016 is aligned to the HMH Election Connection portal, a dynamic online hub that provides information and materials about elections past and present curated for grades 6-12. Resources include teaching activities, simulations and games, and exclusive access to HISTORY® videos that shed light on some of the country's most important historical elections, inspiring students to become active and informed citizens.
