BENTONVILLE, Ark., Dec. 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- On the third day of its "12 Days of Giving" Facebook campaign, Walmart is awarding $120,000 to 10 nonprofits that are caring for seniors. As part of its twelve consecutive days of giving, Walmart will award a total of $1.5 million to 145 organizations in all 50 states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico.
Organizations being honored on the company's Facebook page today are serving communities in: California, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Ohio, Oklahoma and Texas.
"Our senior population plays an important role in our communities, sharing their wisdom and caring for future generations," said Julie Gehrki, senior director at the Walmart Foundation. "The organizations that we are supporting today help us give back to those who have given us so much, providing assistance that helps seniors continue to lead fulfilling, independent lives."
Walmart's call for nominations for its "12 Days of Giving" Facebook campaign resulted in more than 5,400 nominations from Facebook users who shared photos and short descriptions of a nonprofit's impact in its local community. A panel from the Walmart Foundation reviewed submissions and selected nonprofits with a focus on organizations that are providing basic needs such as food, shelter, clothing and baby supplies.
The third day of giving highlights organizations supporting the senior population by providing meals, transportation, financial services, medical and personal care, home repair, clothing and companionship. The organizations being spotlighted today include:
