Walmart Foundation Partners with Nonprofits to Urge Eligible Tax Filers to Take Advantage of Free Tax Preparation Before Time Runs Out
WASHINGTON, April 5, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- With about two weeks left in this year's tax season and with fewer families able to pay to have their taxes prepared in this challenging economic climate, the Walmart Foundation, United Way, One Economy and the National Disability Institute's Real Economic Impact Tour are urging eligible tax filers to take advantage of easy, free tax preparation and filing tools. These tools will help tax filers save money as well as claim refunds and valuable credits like the earned income tax credit (EITC).
According to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), as of March 25, there were still about 60 million taxpayers yet to file their returns this year. The IRS estimates that 20 to 25 percent of all taxpayers file in the final two weeks of the tax season.
This free tax preparation and filing campaign, now in its third year, is a collaborative partnership built on the support of a $4.2 million grant from the Walmart Foundation.
"As people continue to struggle with economic challenges, the Walmart Foundation wants to ensure that those eligible for the earned income tax credit are aware of the benefit and have access to it," said Margaret McKenna, president of the Walmart Foundation. "Through our $4.2 million grant, we are raising awareness and providing access to free filling services. Last year, this grant helped more than 1 million people file their returns for free, amounting to more than $1.6 billion in tax refunds, credits and tax preparation savings."
Each year, one in four eligible families fail to claim their earned income tax credit (EITC). For eligibility requirements and more information on claiming EITC benefits, visit www.MyFreeTaxes.com. Consumers can also calculate their EITC benefits via cell phone by visiting: http://bit.ly/mytaxbackapp.
