DUARTE, Calif., Oct. 21, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The walkers vary by team, but not by mission. On Nov. 2, thousands of people (and hundreds of teams) will gather for City of Hope's Walk for Hope to raise money for, and awareness of, women's cancers. Among them will be a team of family members celebrating a personal triumph over cancer, a team of siblings paying tribute to their mother, a team called Wonder Women supporting a friend currently fighting cancer, and even a team united by a cancer surgeon and a love of bunco. Together, they'll cheer, support, honor and commemorate mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, aunts and friends who are fighting, have fought or even will fight women's cancers, expected to affect one in three women in their lifetime.
The annual walk, presented by Staples, raises funds for research into breast and gynecologic cancers. It's the signature event of the national Walk for Hope series, which has now raised more than $37 million for City of Hope's Women's Cancers Program. It's the only walk series that benefits research, treatment and education programs for all cancers unique to women.
"City of Hope's Women's Cancers Program conducts innovative research to provide effective interventions for women with breast and gynecological cancers, and prevention of disease among women at risk," said Joanne Mortimer, M.D., director of City of Hope's Women's Cancers Program. "We are grateful for the funding we have received through Walk for Hope that enables us to provide a continuum of care — from research to risk assessment, prevention, treatment, education and survivorship."
Most special about the 5K walk is its location, held on City of Hope's campus. Here, distinctive among walk locations, cancer research becomes new cancer treatments. Here, those treatments save lives. The route even passes by City of Hope Helford Clinical Research Hospital, where cancer patients will watch from the windows as walkers cheer, wave and salute their courage. With more than 10,000 participants, Walk for Hope Los Angeles celebrates the collaboration between researchers, patients and the community to end women's cancers.
The event itself will feature an expo area, a live music performance by the Spazmatics, a special ceremony with a survivors moment, giveaways, an interactive photo booth and food trucks. Event-day festivities begin at 8 a.m. and the Walk begins at 10 a.m. Online registration closes on Friday Oct. 31. To register for Walk for Hope Los Angeles or to donate, visit www.walk4hope.org.
