Walk to Cure Arthritis Comes to Denver
Arthritis Foundation Raises Funds for a Cure at the Denver Walk to Cure Arthritis
DENVER, April 11, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Help find a cure by participating and fundraising for the 2014 Walk to Cure Arthritis on May 18 at Washington Park in Denver. Formerly known as the Arthritis Walk, Walk to Cure Arthritis is the Arthritis Foundation's signature, national fundraising event to prevent, control and cure arthritis, the nation's leading cause of disability.
The Denver Walk to Cure Arthritis will feature local honorees who will share their inspirational stories about their battles with arthritis. This year's honorees include Rebecca Gillett and Dr. Ryan Antolini. Gillett was diagnosed with moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis at the age of 26. After years of suffering from constant flare-ups and inflammation, she decided to take control and left her career in marketing to pursue a career in occupational therapy. Today, thanks to proper arthritis management and care, Gillett enjoys traveling, hiking and being outdoors. Antolini has been a rheumatologist since 2008 and became interested in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions due to his sister having a brittle bone condition called osteogenesis imperfecta. He has remained active in the American College of Rheumatology by serving on two standing committees in the past four years.
Arthritis is a crippling disease that impacts more than 52 million adults and 300,000 children – or approximately 22 percent of the United States population. The disease costs the U.S. economy $128 billion dollars a year, and is a more frequent cause of activity limitation than heart disease, cancer or diabetes. Funds raised through the Denver Walk to Cure Arthritis will go toward programs, research and advocacy initiatives to help people today while finding a cure for tomorrow.
"Arthritis is costly, painful and debilitating, and makes a significant impact in the lives of people in your community," says Arthritis Foundation Colorado Advisory Board Chair, Mark Butscher. "By participating in and raising funds for the Denver Walk to Cure Arthritis, you will help us reach our goal of raising $175,000 and bring us closer to a cure."
