MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 27, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Walden University's dedicated day of service started eight years ago with a few projects in the United States and has since grown into a Global Days of Service weeklong international event that demonstrates how positive social change can impact the world. From Sept. 30 to Oct. 6, Walden students, alumni, faculty and staff, along with their families and friends, will have the opportunity to participate in events, donate their time and expertise to serve their communities, and experience firsthand the difference they can make in the lives of others.

"Walden University is truly committed to advancing positive social change. Whether it's gathering around a table with colleagues to make blankets for sick children or working together to brighten a neighborhood school with a fresh coat of paint, our international community of social change agents comes together during this special time to help our neighbors in need," said Dr. Cynthia G. Baum, president of Walden.
The Walden community will lead and contribute to projects such as assisting Ronald McDonald Houses in Baltimore and Los Angeles; working on a Habitat for Humanity project in San Antonio; volunteering at a library in Gdansk, Poland; and participating in a parental involvement fair in the Bronx, New York. Other projects include a school-based health and hygiene project in Nigeria and helping at food banks in Charlotte, N.C.; Indianapolis; Houston; Las Vegas; Orlando, Fla.; and Philadelphia.
"Having strength in numbers helps to create a greater impact and assist organizations that are aligned with Walden's mission of furthering positive social change," said Jessua Mathieu, project leader and administrative assistant at Walden in Minneapolis. "For the second year, we will be volunteering at the Minneapolis American Indian Center to help create a cleaner, more efficient campus while freeing up their staff to focus on their community's needs."
The general public is also invited to join Walden's Global Days of Service. Those who wish to participate should visit the Walden Service Network to find a project near them or a virtual project and register as a volunteer. The Walden Service Network was launched in 2010 and is an online community that connects volunteers with service projects in need of support year-round.
Since its founding in 1970, Walden has attracted a community of lifelong learners who share a common desire to make a difference. Walden students, alumni, faculty and staff members bring Walden's mission to life through research, conferences and service projects focused on effecting positive social change.
