Walden University Counseling Programs Earn CACREP Accreditation

MINNEAPOLIS, March  21, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Walden University announced today that its MS in Addiction Counseling and MS in School Counseling programs have received accreditation by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), the recognized standard of excellence in professional counseling education. These programs, along with Walden's previously accredited MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, MS in Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling and PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision programs, have been granted CACREP accreditation through March 31, 2025.

"CACREP accreditation allows our master's and doctoral graduates to work in the field with more credibility as well as maximize their impact on their communities and profession," said Dr. Savitri Dixon-Saxon, dean of the School of Counseling. "We are pleased that through the successful accreditation review process, two additional Walden counseling programs are now CACREP-accredited, further solidifying that our full suite of counseling programs meets the national standards of quality and relevance to the counseling profession."

In addition to providing students with education and training to prepare for practice as professional counselors, the MS in Addiction Counseling program aims to provide students with the skills needed to offer guidance and treatment to people who struggle with addictive behaviors. The program focuses on ways to address alcohol and other substance abuse and addiction as well as addictive behavior exhibited through activities such as binge eating, pathological gambling, and hoarding. Through this online degree program, students can also learn how to work with dual-diagnosis clients who have both an addiction and a mental disorder.

The MS in School Counseling program is designed to prepare students to qualify and apply for licensure or certification to practice as school counselors and serve as certified or licensed school counselors in pre-kindergarten through high school (P–12) settings. The curriculum includes online coursework, two in-person residencies and field experiences.

Both the MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and the MS in Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling programs help students gain the confidence, qualifications and critical thinking skills needed to seek licensure and apply best practices as change agents in the counseling profession. Walden's online PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision program prepares students with advanced teaching, supervision and counseling skills to broaden their ability to serve as leaders in the fields of counseling and counselor education.
