Walden University Counseling Programs Earn CACREP Accreditation
Online doctoral and master's programs meet recognized standard of excellence in professional counseling education
MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Walden University announced today that its Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision and M.S. in Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling programs have received accreditation by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), the recognized standard of excellence in professional counseling education. These programs join the university's already accredited M.S. in Mental Health Counseling program, making Walden one of the few institutions that offer these CACREP-accredited counseling programs online.

"We are very proud of this achievement, which ensures that both programs meet national standards of quality and relevance to the counseling profession. CACREP accreditation allows our master's and doctoral graduates to work in the field with more credibility as well as maximize their impact on their communities and profession," said Dr. Savitri Dixon-Saxon, associate dean of the School of Counseling. "Graduating from an accredited master's counseling program also helps students gain access to more employment opportunities nationwide and streamlines their licensing application process in many states."
Walden's online Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision program offers students advanced teaching, supervision and counseling skills that broaden their ability to serve as leaders in the field of counseling and counselor education. CACREP criteria states that new core faculty in CACREP-accredited counseling programs (after July 2013) must hold a doctoral degree in counselor education and supervision. Earning a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision provides students with the credentials needed to work as a professional in counselor education and supervision.
Both the M.S. in Mental Health Counseling and the M.S. in Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling programs help students gain the confidence, qualifications and critical-thinking skills needed to seek licensure and apply best practices as a change agent in the counseling profession.
