Walden University Celebrates Black History Month
Tribute includes live and on-demand webinars, Facebook chat and recommended reading list
MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 6, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- To celebrate Black History Month, Walden University is bringing together its community of students, alumni, faculty and staff to acknowledge their appreciation of the contributions made by remarkable African Americans. In various activities throughout February, members of the Walden community will share their stories and insights about African Americans who have influenced or inspired their education, research, careers or social change initiatives.

"This year, Walden commemorates Black History Month by focusing on the achievements of many generations of African Americans who inspire us to make a difference," said Dr. Cynthia Baum, president of Walden. "In addition to recognizing these important figures and sharing their impact with the Walden community, we aspire to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to creating positive social change in our communities, nation and world."

- "Celebrating the Contributions of African Americans," a live webinar on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m. Eastern time, featuring:
- Dr. Ronald Craig, program director, School of Public Policy and Administration, presenting Johnnie Mae Gibson, highest ranking African-American female agent in the FBI during her tenure.
- Dr. Alice Duhon-Ross, program director, The Richard W. Riley College of Education and Leadership, presenting Dr. Rod Paige, former U.S. Secretary of Education.
- Dr. Phyllis Morgan, faculty member, School of Nursing, presenting Dr. Bertha Davis, former Dean of Hampton University School of Nursing.
- Dr. Sean Stanley, Walden Doctor of Business Administration (D.B.A.) graduate, School of Management, presenting Dr. Benjamin S. Carson, neurosurgeon, philanthropist and author.
- "Inspiring the Next Generation of African-American Leaders," a live Facebook chat on Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 1 p.m. Eastern time, at www.facebook.com/WaldenU featuring Chris Rey, a 2007 B.S. in Business Administration graduate and mayor of Spring Lake, N.C.
- On-demand webinars by Walden students, alumni and faculty discussing African Americans who have inspired them throughout their lives.
- A list of books recommended by Walden students, alumni, faculty and staff that explore the struggles and exceptional achievements of African Americans.
- Articles about Walden students and alumni who are continuing in the tradition of great African Americans to create positive change in society.
