Wainhouse Research Examines Lecture Capture Deployment Models in New White Paper

SANTA CLARA, Calif., July 28, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- As demand for access to lecture capture – one of the most transformative higher education technologies of recent time – continues to increase, institutions are now being confronted with the difficult decision of selecting a deployment model that best fits the school's resource capabilities while adhering to short- and long-term budget goals. In efforts to illustrate the technologies supporting lecture capture, Tegrity, a division of McGraw-Hill Higher Education, released a new white paper, Lecture Capture Deployment Models: Tracking Costs for Scalability, written by Wainhouse Research, a leading consultancy specializing in the analysis of market trends and technologies.
In the report, authors Alan D. Greenberg and Andy Nilssen describe the rapid growth and adoption of lecture capture technology and outline the distinct benefits and weaknesses of three different deployment models and their initial - as well as long-term - financial implications. The authors stress the critical importance of selecting the appropriate model to ensure the institution is able to scale its usage affordably. Greenberg and Nilssen explain in the paper, "The range of features and capabilities make it imperative that educators, administrators, and information technology professionals understand their deployment options."
The three deployment models outlined in the paper include;
On-premise
Considered the most traditional lecture capture model, this deployment option places all required delivery hardware and software on the institution's campus. While this model offers the high level of control sought by many institutions, the model relies solely on the campus' IT department for all operational considerations, peak usage monitoring and system management which can be a significant undertaking for many colleges and universities.
Cloud-Based
Often referred to as Software as a Service (SaaS), this model utilizes an outside vendor to deliver a cloud-based service, completely eliminating the need for hardware to be housed on the campus. The service is delivered through a robust infrastructure where it can then be accessed via the internet. This model allows for optimum scalability, management and operational efficiencies and predictable costs.
Hybrid
A variety of hybrid options available combine elements of both the on-premise and cloud based deployment models, as well as the corresponding advantages and disadvantages of each. Hybrid combinations include how the service is delivered, where the content is stored and who is responsible to operational management.
In addition to its in-depth explanation of the advantages of lecture capture and its primary delivery methods, the report includes a calculator to assess the potential cost of ownership over a three or five-year period.
