Vycom Takes Second Place in the International Association of Plastics Distribution (IAPD ) Design Competition for Plastic Products
SCRANTON, Pa., Oct. 24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Vycom, a world leader in PVC and olefin solutions for numerous industries, was named as the second place winner in the first IAPD Plastics Application Design Competition for having its Celtec material used in two compelling public sculptures created by students at the Harvard School of Design. The competition was part of the "Celebrating Plastics" theme of the 57th Annual Convention & Plastics Showcase, Sept 30 – October 2, 2013, Miami, FL. Showcasing innovative uses of plastics in various applications, the top three finalists presented their projects to a live audience of IAPD members, non-members and the media on October 2nd in Miami, FL. The winners were announced at a luncheon following the Plastics Showcase.
The first place winner was Nonspec, from the University of Massachusetts - Lowell for their telescoping prosthetic arms which are accessible to children in all parts of the world and third place went to Cope Plastics for a bearing that safely replaces metal in food manufacturing.
"To be selected as the second place plastics designs by major representatives of our industry is quite an honor," said Don Wharton, President, Vycom. "We were up against two outstanding finalists whose applications also showed a high level of design excellence."
Vycom's Celtec® PVC material was used in the "Surface Deep" and "Surface Deep II" sculptures, created by students at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and visiting lecturers David Mah and Asenio Leyre, who are partners in an international design firm. The design team chose Celtec as the platform for the sculptures due to its workability, lightweight, post-consumer content and resistance to weather conditions and ultraviolet rays. The sculptures were designed to integrate plant ecosystems with modern city architecture in a way that engaged the public. Both sculptures won accolades at international garden shows in Toronto and Quebec, Canada.
In addition to the unique Surface Deep application, Vycom's Celtec® Expanded PVC and Celtec® Ultra White® feature highly printable surfaces for sharp, bold display graphics. To learn more, visit www.vycomplastics.com
