VP of Academics at 51Talk, Dai Yun, Presents Keynote Speech at Sync Silicon Valley 2018, Hosted by PingWest
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 7, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Dai Yun, Vice President of Academics at 51Talk, presented a keynote speech titled "51Talk is Driving Online English Education in China" at SYNC Silicon Valley 2018 hosted by PingWest.
Sync Silicon Valley is PingWest's flagship annual conference, aiming to bring the world's sharpest minds and most innovative organizations together. At the conference, over 300 tech visionaries, global entrepreneurs, and investors come together for 2 days of expert panels, fireside chats, and key networking sessions.
Dai's keynote speech introduced both key metrics and specific company strategies.
As of 2017, the company had acquired 250,000 active paid users and achieved a network of 13,000+ Filipino English teachers on its online English learning platform in China.
51Talk's pivot from adult teachers to the K-12 demographic over the past three years has proven successful. The percentage of gross billings contributed by K-12 students reached 83.8% as of Q1 2018, compared with 24.5% in Q1 2015.
When discussing the reason why 51Talk chose to work with Filipino English teachers, Dai stated "Filipino teachers are service-oriented and share cultural similarities with Chinese students. Also, there is no time difference between both countries, which makes scheduling classes with Chinese students ideal. In comparison to working with other American or British teachers, Filipino teachers are both well-suited and cost-effective."
A core theme in Dai's speech was how 51Talk is using technology to drive online English education in China. "Our internal platform, AirClass, is an intelligent, individualized, and fun learning platform on all devices for K-12 students. Our tech team uses big data to monitor student's progress and enable individualized teaching. We also have integrated a number of AI technologies into AirClass, such as facial recognition, emotional recognition, and spoken English evaluation. These features allow us to manage the platform at scale."
At the end of his speech, Dai reiterated the company's commitment to "love and empower every child." This, according to Dai, is the underlying principle for all of 51Talk's work.
