NEW YORK, Aug. 18, 2016 Family Circle, the number-one-selling food and family magazine in the U.S. with an audience of 16 million monthly readers, announced today that the voting period is now open for their Presidential Cookie Poll, which invites consumers to bake original cookie recipes shared by the Clinton and Trump families and vote for their favorite. The quadrennial tradition has been observed during the fall of every general election year since 1992.
This year, the Clinton's have resubmitted their previously winning (1992 and 1996) chocolate chip cookies made with old-fashioned oats.
On the Republican side, the Trump's have submitted star cookies made with egg yolks and sour cream.
Consumers can find both recipes on FamilyCircle.com and vote for their favorite on the Family Circle Facebook Page. The voting period ends in early October, and the winning recipe will be revealed shortly thereafter.
The contest made its debut during Bill Clinton's 1992 campaign, when Hillary Clinton said she "could have stayed home and baked cookies" rather than pursue her law career. Family Circle responded to the headline-making statement by unveiling their original bake-off, which challenged the two would-be first ladies—then Hillary and Barbara Bush—to submit a personal recipe that readers would enjoy making and tasting. Since then, candidates' spouses have entered their family's go-to cookie for Family Circle editors to whip up in their state-of-the-art test kitchens.
"For the past 24 years, during the high-stakes time of election season, we've been serving up a fun opportunity for readers to brush up on their baking skills and vote for one presidential hopeful's treasured family cookie recipe—simply using the criterion of taste," said Family Circle Food Director Regina Ragone. "These cookies give us a small window into the lives of the potential first families, and we're excited to hear whether readers prefer the classic Clinton confection or the Trumps' star-shaped treat," says Ragone.
The poll has correctly predicted who would go on to live in the White House five out of the past six election cycles. In 2012—after tallying up more than 9,000 votes—Family Circle revealed that Michelle Obama's white and dark chocolate chip cookies won the battle against Ann Romney's M&M's cookies.
