Vonage's U.S. Patent Portfolio Grows to More Than 50 Issued Patents
HOLMDEL, N.J., Aug. 26, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Vonage Holdings Corp. (NYSE: VG), a leading provider of communication services connecting consumers and businesses through cloud-connected devices worldwide, announced today that it was granted two additional patents by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Vonage has been granted 14 U.S. patents in 2014 and now owns 51 U.S. patents.
U.S. Pat. No. 8,817,063, "Methods and Systems for Voice and Video Messaging," covers Vonage's proprietary video messaging feature, which allows users to dynamically choose between leaving a traditional audio-only voicemail or a video message when a call to another user goes unanswered. Vonage's video messaging feature, released in November 2013, is included with its Vonage Mobile® app, the first communications app to offer this option.
U.S. Pat. No. 8,817,961, "Method and Apparatus for Providing Trusted Caller ID Services," covers a system that notifies a call recipient when the caller ID of the calling party has been authenticated. This technology assures the call recipient that the caller ID shown is legitimate and has not been "spoofed."
"An important element of Vonage's growth strategy has been the integration of mobile services across our entire business, and we have focused our efforts on enhancing the quality, usability and features of our mobile applications," said Chief Legal Officer Kurt M. Rogers. "We are pleased to receive patent protection for Vonage Mobile's unique video-voicemail feature, which joins a growing list of patents that covers our mobile services.
"The '961 patent provides an important solution to the problem of caller ID spoofing, which occurs when the caller ID has been faked to make callers appear to be people they are not. This practice may become more common with the increased use of VoIP. With the addition of these two new patents, Vonage now owns more than 50 U.S. patents, a milestone that highlights the development of our intellectual property assets and strategy."
Vonage has 240 U.S. patent applications pending, along with numerous foreign patents and pending applications in jurisdictions worldwide.
