Volunteers of America Illinois Honors National Equity Fund's Debbie Burkart
CHICAGO, Nov. 7, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Becoming an expert in your field takes time and commitment. It demands a thorough knowledge as well as a profound passion for what one does. And that describes National Equity Fund's Debbie Burkart, who was honored today by Volunteers of America Illinois with its Corporate Silver Star Award at its 8th annual veterans' leadership luncheon at the Renaissance Blackstone Chicago hotel.
As NEF's national vice president for supportive housing, she has assisted in the acquisition and underwriting of more than $800 million in tax credit equity for special needs developments throughout the country and has led the LISC-NEF veteran housing initiative, Bring them HOMES, since its inception in 2012. Since that time, over $4.3 million, which includes $4 million in grants, has been raised to build more than 50 developments with 4,343 residences to meet the needs of homeless veterans and their families.
In addition, Burkart is a nationally recognized authority in not only supportive housing financing but also policy having cultivated relationships with relevant government agencies easing the path to bringing these developments to fruition. In 2008, she became a National Coalition for Homeless Veterans board member and recently joined the Corporation for Supportive Housing's (CSH) board.
Working tirelessly with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Burkart advocates and assists with implementing the adaptive reuse of thousands of acres of idle land and buildings owned by the VA, which are located near its healthcare facilities, for construction of veterans supportive housing with easy access to VA healthcare and services.
