Volunteer Leaders and HBA Chapters Lauded at the 2011 HBA Leadership Institute
FAIRFIELD, N.J., Nov. 9, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Each year the Healthcare Businesswomen's Association offers exclusive leadership training for more than 200 chapter board members across organization at the Leadership Institute. The HBA Leadership Institute prepares the boards of its 15 chapters in nonprofit association governance and leadership. The evening prior to this event, exceptional leaders across the HBA are showcased during an awards ceremony. The HBA is pleased to announce the following award winners:
President's Award
The President's Award is given to an HBA leader who exemplified effective leadership and dedication to the mission of the HBA and had a measurable impact on the HBA global organization, chapter operations, members and/or corporate partners. This year two outstanding leaders were given this award: Eve Dryer and Kathy Whaley.
Eve Dryer, principal at Vox Medica, and the director at large for key stakeholders on the HBA board was given this award for her outstanding dedication and service to the HBA. Eve has served on the WOTY, ACE, advisory board and HBA Leadership Conference committees and at the chapter level.
Kathy Whaley, vice-president of operations for Healthcare USA and 2011, and treasurer for the St. Louis chapter was lauded for her outstanding contributions to the role of chapter treasurer. Kathy created several financial processes that have been adapted as best practices across the HBA.
Innovation Awards
These awards recognize a demonstration of commitment, passion and a drive for results that lead to the creation of a new process, product, service or level of recognition for HBA that has or will have a positive benefit to the association and/or its chapter operations. Two awards, one for an individual and another for a group were presented.
2011 Individual Innovation Award
Stephanie Foye
Stephanie Foye served as the primary market research lead for the Corporate Partner Program restructure. Stephanie managed the professional market research firm that conducted this game-changing research, pored through pages of phone interviews, analyzed the results, summarized the trends that led to the development of new packages for Corporate Partners. Stephanie assured that the team used evidence to make sound business decisions. The result of Stephanie's discipline was a customized solution for different segments of our Corporate Partner community.

The Leadership in Practice Team brought the HBA into a new realm of virtual programming. The creation of Leadership Online, a learning community hosted on the Unisfair platform now allows the HBA to bring the highest quality of interactive programming to our members wherever they are, whenever they have the time. This team took this from idea to implementation in just a few months. The pilot program Leadership in Practice: Equanimity Under Duress brought self learning and small group coaching to hundreds to HBA members this fall and sets the stage for several new offerings for the HBA.
Council of Chapter Presidents' Award
This award is intended to recognize an individual who has demonstrated consistent leadership that directly progressed the CCP agenda, fostered collaboration throughout the council, and brought best practices to fruition across chapters. This year two outstanding leaders were given this award: Gabi Niederauer and Carol Wells.
Gabi Niederauer, vice president of research and development at ENTrigue Surgical Inc. serves as the president of the San Antonio chapter. Gabi led the chapter to capitalize on the breadth of healthcare entities located in the San Antonio including entrepreneurs, educational institutions, research organizations, non-profit organizations and hospital systems. Gabi is a strong leader; she encourages her board to reach for their goals and is generous in sharing her chapter's successful practices across the entire HBA.
Carol Wells, senior director, commercial L&D, Genentech moved quickly from a general board position to president of the San Francisco chapter. Carol embraced the challenge through recognizing a need to reset strategy, developing and motivating the chapter leadership team, and focusing on the core needs of members. Under her leadership, the chapter increased offerings, gained support of many more volunteers and sponsors and pioneered a new event delivery model. Her clear vision, matched with expertise and enthusiasm, serves as a shining example of true leadership.
Chapter Excellence Award
This award is to acknowledge an entire chapter board that has excelled in an area of chapter operations that exceeded the HBA's membership and/or financial targets and the chapter's own expectations. The winning chapter is recognized for having achieved excellence in membership recruitment and retention; programming innovation and attendance; engagement and sharing with other chapters and the corporate level of HBA; and maintained strong financial health.

The HBA San Antonio chapter held 14 innovative events in 2011 serving 1,400 attendees. The chapter's key State of the Industry event attracted 315 attendees and close to $30,000 in sponsorship and was podcasted via a partnership with Texas Public Radio. Nearly 60% of the chapter's members volunteer for the HBA. These members come from 84 companies attesting to the diversity of the chapter's impact.
2011 HBA Setting the Bar Award
Like the Chapter Excellence Award, this award goes to an entire chapter board that has excelled in nearly all areas of chapter operations. This is a new award for the HBA leadership this year.

Florida raised the bar for expectations for new chapters. Began in May of 2010 they achieved chapter status in just over one year. They achieved 47% profitability, got nearly 120 members, secured sponsors, formed an advisory board, began a mentoring program, and enlisted the support of over 40 volunteers.
LEAD (Leadership Excellence and Dedication) Award
This award honors 15 exceptional volunteer leaders, each representing one of HBA's 15 chapters. Many deserving volunteers were nominated and only one volunteer leader was then selected by a majority vote of their chapter board. Award winners made a significant contribution during the current calendar year, demonstrated excellence via sustained contributions, positively impacted the chapter and its ongoing success, exemplified leadership excellence overall, demonstrated dedication to the HBA mission and has made a positive impact upon others.
