Volunteer Awareness Day Income Tax Assistance Helps Americans Claim The Earned Income Credit
CHICAGO, March 15, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Center for Economic Progress (CEP) is one of over 12,000 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) programs across the country that the Internal Revenue Service relies on to help people file their taxes free of charge every year. March 15, 2017, midway through the tax filing season, marks national VITA Awareness Day.
The VITA program leverages the power of volunteerism and community engagement to bring together volunteers, community organizations, corporations and government for this important work on behalf of low-income tax filers.
Joy Rosenberg, who directs CEP's volunteer recruitment and management efforts, said "thanks to hundreds of volunteers working during the tax season, we generate more than $ 28 million dollars in tax refunds each year." "Our volunteers represent neighbors helping neighbors', corporate responsibility in action, and service with dignity," Rosenberg adds. CEP volunteers share their stories of why they do this work in several personal videos at facebook.com/economicprogress.
The VITA program builds financial stability for working families with children by helping them claim the refundable Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC). The IRS estimates that one in five eligible workers does not claim the Earned Income Tax Credit, missing out on thousands of dollars they've earned. Life changes such as divorce, falling behind on repaying student loans or changes in job status can make filing a tax return critically important. CEP provides its services to individuals earning less than $30,00 and $55,000 for families, helping them to claim a range of tax credits and benefits.
David Marzahl CEP President and CEO says "We strengthen the civic fabric of our region, and increase community and individual capacity, by training and mobilizing 1,000 volunteers to serve at the frontlines of financial health – helping prepare tax returns, and providing financial coaching, and professional legal advice year round."
CEP is proud to leverage the power of its volunteers to improve the financial stability of those we serve. Visit www.economicprogress.org for more information about CEP, volunteering, and our free tax preparation services. Follow us on Facebook for more volunteer stories.
