Earlier this year, Gartner published the report The OLTP DBMS Market Becomes the Operational DBMS Market defining many of the new pressures on the traditional database design including the rise of throughput resulting from "observations and interactions" to the traditional workload. The Internet of Things and in-memory database systems were described as accelerating the adoption of alternative systems.
"VoltDB has had a remarkable year, punctuated by recognition from Gartner in its first-ever assessment of the market for operational database systems," said CEO Bruce Reading. "It's clear from Gartner's research that the one-size-fits-all approach to database systems is antiquated, and we believe that our in-memory architecture is the key for extracting the maximum business value from data by being able to analyze and decision on it at the optimal time: the moment it arrives."
In the Magic Quadrant for Operational Database Management Systems for 2013, Gartner analysts Donald Feinberg, Merv Adrian, and Nick Heudecker address the dynamic nature of the DBMS market: "The operational DBMS, formerly the OLTP DBMS market, became very mature during the early part of the 21st century. As Internet usage and availability grew, so did the applications necessary to support this growing infrastructure. Over the past five years, a large number of new vendors have entered the transaction market with products in support of the specialized applications needed to support this new, global business world."
Today, organizations of all types are working to gain a competitive advantage by devising new ways to identify and act on fast-moving, valuable data. By leveraging technology that ingests and analyzes large volumes of a variety of data, organizations can leverage every single piece of data for maximum benefit. VoltDB is rapidly becoming the solution of choice for organizations in both established markets such as financial services, healthcare and retail, and emerging markets such as digital advertising and online gaming, in order to harness the power of Big Data to make meaningful, impactful business decisions in real-time.
