Voiceless Cargo: Symposium On Human Trafficking And Sex Slavery
United Nations Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women to Receive Inaugural
William McKinley Award for Good Governance
ALBANY, N.Y., Feb. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Experts from China, Ireland and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will gather at Albany Law School on Feb. 28, 2013, to discuss "Voiceless Cargo: Human Trafficking and Sex Slavery in the Modern Era."
Twenty-seven million people are held in bondage around the world, according to the organization Free the Slaves, and 800,000 people are trafficked across international borders each year, according to the U.S. Department of State.
Rashida Manjoo, the Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women for the United Nations, will receive the inaugural William McKinley Award for Good Governance for her commitment to exposing and eliminating violence towards women across the globe. She will also deliver the symposium's keynote as this year's installment of the law school's Edward C. Sobota '79 Memorial Lecture Series.
