The summer season gives homeowners and families across the country the opportunity to spend more time outside enjoying the warm weather. Unfortunately, summer is also a time when homes are at a higher risk to be burglarized. According to the FBI, crime rates increase 6–16% during the summer, and home intrusion increases 10–20% during July and August.
When temperatures rise, homeowners often lower their guard and leave their entry points vulnerable: leaving windows open for a breeze, leaving garages open for convenience, and leaving doors unlocked to let the neighborhood kids get inside. All of these activities can make it easier for burglars to enter a home, especially since most burglars report entering their targets through open windows and doors or by forcing open an entry point.
Vivint is helping homeowners everywhere ensure that their homes don't become statistics this summer with its home automation and home security systems.
Ken Clifton from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, has experienced this feeling of safety firsthand. In 2004, the Cliftons had their car stolen when they accidentally left their garage door ajar. However, now that the family has a Vivint system—including a garage door sensor—they've been able to relax and know they are in good hands. "One night my son came home and put his car in the garage," says Clifton, "and then left with some friends. At 12:14 a.m., I got a text saying the garage door was left open. I got up to check, and sure enough it was open. Thanks to Vivint and their text alerts, I can go to bed and not worry about a thing."
But home burglary isn't the only thing Vivint prevents. This system also allows customers to control who has access to their homes—even when they're not there.
"One of our favorite features is accessing our whole system from our iPhones," says Brandon Hodges from Hahira, Georgia. "If a neighbor needs to get in and borrow something, it's not a problem. We just disarm the system and unlock the door. It's comforting to know that we don't have to leave a door unlocked to let someone in and that our home is always safe and secure."
