Vital Labs Emerges From Stealth With Revolutionary Cardiovascular Health Technology
Company's Private Beta App, Vitality, Detects Changes in Blood Pressure Using Smartphone Camera
BURLINGAME, Calif., Oct. 2, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Vital Labs, a digital health company dedicated to advancing cardiovascular health, today announced the private beta launch of its revolutionary iOS app, Vitality. Vitality leverages the iPhone's camera and graphics processing power to determine changes in the cardiovascular system, including blood pressure. The user simply places their index finger in front of their iPhone camera and records a 30 second video. The app then observes blood flow patterns in the user's fingertip and uses that pulsation to detect changes in blood pressure, enabling patients with cardiovascular issues to easily monitor their health between doctor visits.
Vital Labs is founded by Tuhin Sinha, PhD, the former technical director for University of California, San Francisco's Health eHeart Study. The Health eHeart Study is the largest digital health cardiovascular study to date. Dr. Sinha is an expert in biological signal analysis and held previous roles at UCSF and Vanderbilt University where he directed the use of and developed novel medical image analysis algorithms.
Discontent with the current standard for blood pressure measurement, which was developed 110 years ago, Sinha set out to invent a new solution that leverages today's technology. Sinha believes that, while tremendous prognostic and diagnostic value have been derived from the current standard for blood pressure measurement, little has been done to enable novel ways of measuring blood pressure change since.
Vital Labs has focused its efforts on enabling fast and accurate measurement of blood pressure change using the highly-advanced, ubiquitous technology available on smartphones. Furthermore, Vital Labs' algorithms easily lend themselves to novel biomarker discovery at scale, given the ease and abundance of data capture enabled by the Vitality app.
"The phone is a great way for us to introduce our technology," said Sinha. "Our app demonstrates the incredible value of being able to simply and easily take blood pressure measurements in real-time and get immediate feedback on a person's cardiovascular health. We know the future may allow data capture on new devices, such as watches, so we built our technology in a way that will allow it to be leveraged on numerous devices in the future. We are also very excited to build upon our expertise in healthcare delivery and eventually develop new health markers and personalized recommendations based on the data we collect."
"Tuhin and his team at Vital Labs are pioneering a new era of personalized cardiovascular healthcare," said Adam D'Augelli, partner at early stage investment firm True Ventures. "He saw an opportunity to improve a stagnant practice and invented a new approach that takes full advantage of today's technologies. We're incredibly excited to get behind this and support Tuhin and his team as they change cardiovascular health management for so many people."
True Ventures initially financed Vital Labs in June of 2015. The company remained in stealth, until now, as it conducted rigorous validation of its novel algorithms. Vital Labs currently seeks private beta testers for the Vitality app. Those interested in participating can sign up to be considered at www.vitallabs.com.
