Visit the Center for Living Peace on Saturday, October 29th and Take a Virtual Trip Through the Edible Gardens and Farms of Kenya with Urban Farmer Eugene Cooke
Get inspired about sustainable community development worldwide
IRVINE, Calif., Oct. 5, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Eugene Cooke has been developing edible gardens and mini-farms for the past decade at homes, schools, churches and more in both the U.S. and in East Africa. Cooke will share insights and photos of his research trip to Kenya studying food growing practices. Cooke's talks are brimming with helpful information about "how" to garden but more importantly, he reminds us "why" we tend the garden - to be grounded, to have a childlike sense of wonder about the world around us, to build community--planting as a service.
Local food systems are developing worldwide and Cooke spent the first quarter of 2011 traveling and learning about farming and food in Kenya. He'll share incredible images of the beautiful and lush region, the farmers, skills, technology and traditions he encountered. Here in the U.S., the local food movement continues to grow and many are lobbying for political support for local food systems. People from all walks of life are supporting urban agriculture projects that aim to empower and enrich the lives of city dwellers. This movement has grown through education and strong opposition to commercial agribusiness and genetically modified foods. Eugene will discuss the power of organizing coupled with the humility of service as he shares stories of growers working to feed the people close to them. Calling all students, parents, educators and activists to deepen the scope of this new ecology of good food.
