'Visionary in Historic Preservation' Award Presented to Philadelphia Architect

HARRISBURG, Pa., Nov. 9, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) presented its "Visionary in Historic Preservation" award to Emanuel Kelly, FAIA, principal at the firm in Kelly/Maiello, Inc. Architects and Planners in Philadelphia.

PHMC Executive Director Barbara Franco presented the honor during a recent ceremony at The State Museum of Pennsylvania, praising Kelly as "a proven leader in advocating for the revitalization of Pennsylvania city neighborhoods through careful understanding of their historic architecture."

Kelly has been a strong partner with and advocate for numerous state and non-profit agencies, sharing his wisdom and experience freely. He currently serves on the Fairmount Park Art Association, the City of Philadelphia Art Commission and Philadelphia's Zoning Reform Commission.

His work with the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission's Historic Preservation Review Board has been invaluable in setting policy and evaluating historic resources throughout the commonwealth. Kelly developed criteria in evaluating modern architecture and its place in architectural history. Under his leadership, the review board and PHMC staff have gained new understanding in critically evaluating historic resources.

The Visionary in Historic Preservation Award is Pennsylvania's top historic preservation award, presented annually to an individual or organization that has demonstrated leadership in helping Pennsylvania communities embrace strong preservation values. The award honors stewards that have demonstrated extraordinary effort and innovation in educating and planning for the future of the state's cultural and historic resources.
