"Amazing!" sums up student reaction to immersive experiences from real-world practitioners at VCS Creative Day
NEW YORK, April 19, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Yesterday Village Community School hosted its inaugural Creative Day to expand its K-8 students' awareness of real-world applications of STEAM skills [Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math]. Students participated in 15, age-appropriate, interactive workshops spanning coding, drone aeronautics, animated narratives, robotics, digital music and more, all organized by the VCS Technology Department and parents.
Among the professionals presenting hands-on projects were:
- National Geographic's Greg Marshall, inventor of the Crittercam, an unobtrusive camera that's transformed wildlife study
- Grace Benz, Google software engineer and VCS alumna
- I Quant NY's founder Ben Wellington, a quantitative researcher
- Laura Overdeck, founder of Bedtime Math
- Zachary Oxman, a sculptor who incorporates Virtual Reality in his process
- Michael Furnari from the Guinness Book of World Records
Representatives from Pixel Academy, Tek Intellect, Children's Museum of the Arts, The Coding Space and Jump Into the Light also brought their eye-popping presentations to VCS.
"What an inspiring day of learning about innovation," said Eve Kleger, Head of School at VCS. "The students as well as the adults gained so much in terms of our understanding of what's happening and what's possible in STEAM-focused fields." Indeed, enthusiastic student responses echoed throughout the school all day, "Amazing!" being a consistent refrain.
"This is really about making connections between concepts, skills-based applications and imagination," said Jill Kaplan, VCS Director of Technology. "Role models like these working professionals inspire our students to see their own world-changing potential."
