Village Community School Partners with GO Project
Public school students gain skills and combat summer learning loss through intensive academic program
NEW YORK, July 18, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- This summer Village Community School [VCS] is proud to be hosting 150 students in grades 5-7 from the GO Project, an organization dedicated to shaping the futures of low-income children from more than 50 public schools in downtown Manhattan by providing critical academic, social and emotional support services during their formative years.
"It's so important for students to remain academically engaged throughout the summer months," said Eve Kleger, VCS Head of School. "We're excited to provide the GO Project with some great spaces for teaching and learning."
"We are incredibly grateful to VCS for welcoming our middle school students, teachers, volunteers, specialists, interns and staff. This is an important partnership for GO as we join with VCS to bridge the educational gap for public school children through access to year-round academic and family support services," said Gayle Villani, Interim Executive Director of the GO Project.
The program runs Monday through Friday for five weeks and packs plenty into each eight-hour day. GO Middle students study core subjects with teachers, specialists and volunteers. After lunch, students delve into art, music, computers, physical education and other enrichment clubs that nurture their individual creativity and interests.
Skipping the pool in favor of summer classes may be tough, but students soon realize the rewards. "Through GO Project, we've seen children who were once struggling and disengaged at school transform into the most dedicated students in the classroom," said Kleger. "Instead of falling behind, GO students perform on grade level, are promoted to the next grade on time and are accepted into high performing middle and high schools. It's a terrific program."
