LIVERMORE, Calif., Oct. 25, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- At the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Conference in Philadelphia, Vigilant Solutions, a global intelligence and analytics company serving law enforcement agencies, awarded the City of Doral Police Department the 2017 Best in Force Award. The annual award recognizes a law enforcement agency's innovative and exceptional use of license plate recognition (LPR) and/or facial recognition technology and includes a $5,000 contribution from Vigilant to the charity fund of the winner's choice. The City of Doral Police Department chose the Police Officers Assistance Trust (POAT), a support organization in Miami-Dade County area, to receive the donation to support officers and their families in times of need.
"We are proud to present the Best in Force Award to the Doral Police Department," said Shawn Smith, Vigilant Founder and President. "The department embodies a spirit of innovation and has implemented cutting-edge strategies aimed at solving crimes and keeping their community safe. We look forward to hearing more of their success stories in the future."
The City of Doral Police Department relied on LPR cameras for a variety of investigations. For example, in 2015 the city of Doral experienced a large number of vehicle burglaries during which victims were followed from banks after making cash withdrawals. After a witness provided a partial license plate number, detectives tracked the suspect vehicle and used an LPR alert when it was detected in the area. Using this investigative lead, detectives conducted surveillance that led to the arrest of four individuals who police witnessed attempting to commit a burglary.
"The ability to find a stolen vehicle on the street is great, but our detectives go above and beyond by utilizing Vigilant's LPR to identify suspect vehicles, placing suspects or witnesses at the scene of an incident and using historical data to go back in time to identify who the involved parties are, making this technology the way of the future as it relates to fighting crime," said City of Doral Police Department Lieutenant Cathy Jewett. "We use the technology almost daily to analyze crime trends and develop leads, which has aided our ability to successfully identify and apprehend criminals."
Lieutenant Jewett continued, "In the past, detectives were unable to easily correlate the information from one crime scene with data from another, but now they can co-locate multiple vehicles and establish patterns. This helps them solve more crimes in a fraction of the time."
In June of 2015, the City of Doral Police Department began implementing Vigilant's LPR solution. The department gathers more than 8,000 license plate detections per month, two percent of which result in "hits" related to crimes such as stolen vehicles, missing persons, Amber Alerts, fugitives and homicides. The city currently operates 96 LPR cameras at 17 intersections.
